Text Conversion Documentation
DOS text files, and Wordstar files converted with the WS2FW program
supplied with Framework, contain a "hard" carriage return at the end
of each line. These end-of-line markers, seen as paragraph signs ()
when "Display Hidden Characters" on the Edit menu is turned on, are
interpreted by Framework as paragraph boundaries--that is, each line
is considered a separate paragraph. Before such a file can be edited
with any ease in Framework, the end-of-line carriage returns must be
deleted, either manually or with the aid of a conversion program, so
that automatic paragraph reforming can take effect.
The program TC.COM prepares a DOS text file for editing in Framework
by stripping end-of-line carriage returns while at the same time
preserving the carriage return at the end of each paragraph. This
conversion is carried out subject to the following conditions:
(1) The file must contain blank lines between paragraphs or
paragraphs that begin with an indented line.
(2) All indented lines--that is, all lines beginning with a space
or tab--are treated as the start of a new paragraph.
TC.COM gives you the option of replacing carriage returns with
spaces, so that words will not be run together when lines are joined.
Not all DOS text files require this treatment--if you are not sure,
experiment and reconvert if necessary.
TC.COM accepts path names for input and output files. When the
conversion begins, a window opens which allows you to observe the
conversion in progress. This is fun to watch, but if maximum speed is
desired, tap any key to freeze the display--this works as a toggle:
tap any key again and the display returns. Also for maximum speed,
put the output file on a different disk drive than the one containing
the input file, or optimally put both files on a RAM disk.
In the converted file each paragraph consists of a stream of
characters terminated by a carriage return. When loading the file
into Framework for editing, remember to set the right margin of your
word frame to the desired line length so that the text can be
reformatted accordingly.
The formula at the border of this frame uses the FRED @run command to
run TC.COM from the Framework desktop. Edit the formula so that the
path designation matches the drive and directory where TC.COM is
located in your system.
